Kauffman Center floors require more than elbow grease to stay clean

Lenexa, Kan. – When your company building includes more than 285,000 square feet and a lobby covered in white Portuguese limestone, you have to reach for more than just a Swiffer. In fact, the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts had to get a little inventive to ensure the gleaming tile that covers Brandmeyer Great Hall stays as shiny and white as the day it was installed six years ago.

“You can’t just clean a limestone floor,” said Bill Miller, vice president of operations for the Kauffman Center. “You can run the scrubber over it, but it’s so soft the dirt penetrates too deeply. So, over time the heavy traffic areas start to turn dark on the white floor.”

So, when Lenexa-based SG360 was brought on board to clean the Kauffman Center, Miller asked them to implement the only effective floor-cleaning process the center was able to come up with. Using a diamond-encrusted pad on a buffing machine, the SG360 crew effectively scrapes an ultra-thin layer of limestone off the top of the tile. Heavy areas typically need the treatment three times a year, and SG360 goes over the entire floor once annually. Miller said the quality of the SG360 service is crucial to ensuring the patron experience they try to achieve.

“I think we have a building that would be challenging to any organization, but the flexibility and custom service that SG360 has been able to provide pushed them to the front for us for sure,” Miller said. “Plus, as an organization in which excellence is critical in all that we do, it’s extremely important that our staff and partners – like SG360 – convey that excellence with a professional presence. The SG360 team gets that.  They maintain an immaculate professional look and they understand how they should interact with our patrons and our staff. The care has improved year after year because they continue to refine their approach.”

In fact, special use facilities like the Kauffman Center are one of SG360’s core industries. The company has just begun cleaning the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, which includes a 4,500-square-foot rehearsal space in its Crossroads building, as well as Scheels, the sporting goods megastore in Overland Park that includes a Ferris wheel, a 16,000-gallon aquarium and a shooting gallery, all housed in 220,000 square feet of retail space.

“Whether your business is in a museum, performing arts center, office building or anything in between, your facility needs to look its best,” said David Harvey, CEO of SG360. “It’s really all about presentation, and appearance is everything when your guests arrive. We take our work at the Kauffman Center very seriously, and we’re so proud they’ve trusted us to keep such an iconic Kansas City facility looking its best.”
